Carpet History
The story of carpet history. It is very easy to take the lovely thick pile between our toes for granted and forget that carpets weren’t always a common occurrence in everybody’s home. Most people had to settle for primitive floor coverings to protect their food and clothing from the dirty floor. Elaborate designs and materials were restricted to the high and mighty members of society who could afford to have such beautiful threads on their floors. The beginning of carpet history for all.
Definition of Carpets
A carpet is defined as a textile floor covering that has an upper pile embedded into a backing. Carpets can be made of wool but are more commonly made out of man-made fibres such as; nylon and polypropylene or polyester. There are many types of carpet named after the country in which they were made; Persian, Chinese and Afghan are to name but a few, these tend to be more like rugs and are used as a decorative centre piece in a large room. When we talk about carpets we are generally referring to carpets that cover the floor from wall to wall and are secured under a skirting board.
Different Types of Carpets
Carpets can be woven, knotted, tufted and embroidered and vary in price and quality depending on the material used and the method to produce it. Embroidered carpets tend to be most expensive and have to be looked after with great care, they are resilient and there are still ancient rugs made in this way in existence. These days we tend to select carpets to last only a few years and match the decor in our rooms. Modern carpets are generally made from man-made materials and are not as hard-wearing as we would often like them to be.
Carpet Cleaning
Ever since we started to use floor coverings we have been developing various methods to clean our carpets so that they maintain their colour and good condition. It seems that whether you use old fashioned methods or new methods, using machinery, there is one thing for certain and that is cleaning carpets requires an awful lot of elbow grease. We have been scrubbing carpets and rugs for centuries to achieve a clean and welcoming home. We at Bristol Carpet Cleaners still used the tried and tested method of scrubbing to remove the most stubborn dirt before we start our process of steam cleaning.
